Botpress Lite
Making AI bot building as simple as a conversation
Background
Botpress is a platform for building and deploying conversational AI agents, such as chatbots. I created Botpress Lite, a mobile-friendly version that turns the complex setup process into an intuitive, conversational onboarding experience.
Role
UX/UI Designer

Timeline

Impact
75% of participants completed the setup without assistance, with an average satisfaction rating of 4.3/5.
PROBLEM
New users are expected to be AI building experts
All key features lived on a single screen, designed for developers who understood AI configuration. For new users especially those without technical background, the interface was intimidating.
📌The challenge
Let's make advanced AI creation feel approachable and intuitive!
RESEARCH
Exploring the problem space
Its a fast fast fast growing technology
The global chatbot market reached $8.27B in 2024 and is projected to grow to $29.5B by 2029.
40% of chatbot adopters are small businesses (<250 staff)
This shows a need for customer service automation without hiring dedicated developers.
COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS
Either powerful or simple, not both
I analyzed leading chatbot builders to understand where onboarding breaks down. Most products fall into two extremes:
Powerful but intimidating (Dialogflow and Botpress) or simple but shallow (Elfsight and ManyChat).
💡Insight
No platform balanced ease of use and technical feasibility, there is an especially limited capability in mobile among the platforms too.
FINDING OPPORTUNITY
Let's simplify setup while preserving capabilities
62.5%
of global web traffic coming from mobile. This made a gap clear that no chatbot builder had merged an AI-driven setup with mobile-first design.
MORE IDEATION
Brainstorming for a mobile-first approach
💡Insight
By reframing bot creation as a conversation, we could turn setup into a co-creation process where the AI acts as a helpful partner, not a hidden system.
THE USER
Who I designed for
Small business owners
Overwhelmed by new technology. Needs clarity and step by step support.
Growing start-ups
Tech-savvy and on the go. Needs to automate quickly, yet have room to scale for more.

REFLECTIONS
Key takeaways
What I learned
🌱Do what's natural: New users do not initially think in terms of flows, nodes, or intents. Designing around natural language input made AI creation feel approachable.
🤓Clarity at the core: Simplifying language, breaking tasks into smaller steps, and hiding complexity until needed created an experience that felt both capable and beginner-friendly for users at any technical skill level.
Next steps
💌More accessibility considerations: As I used Botpress' brand colours to create my designs, I noticed some colour combinations used were not passing WCAG 2.0 level AA contrast ratio. If more time was available, I would consider switch and experiment more with the colours so that they can reach ideal ratios.
